Ipod created a monster

One of the perks of getting the Mac Book Pro is that it came with an Ipod Touch.  Muddy and Brian are both very impressed by it.  Brian has been checking my email on it, so much so that I just said, "OMG, Kim left the funniest comment about the video of the kids climbing up the waterslide..." and he cut me off to say, "the American Gladiators?"  I said, "Yeah, how did you know that?" He gestured toward the Ipod.  No wonder I didn't remember getting a message that there was a new comment!  Seriously, go look at Kim's comment from yesterday's blog- it might be one of the most appropriate and funniest comments ever.  WTG Aunt Kim!
The waterslide never even made it up today! Can you believe it?  Major slackers.  We did the usual breakfast out, then ran an errand to BJ's, then came home.  Ben has requested to "go night night" about 5 times today.  It's code for, "I want to nurse and lay down."  His teeth are really bothering him, so I think the soothing makes him feel better.  We put Enchanted on, since we bought it at BJ's.  Addie and Brian watched it while I cleaned up, did laundry, etc.  I eventually ran out to Ann Taylor (which for those who know me in person, know how dangerous this can be!).  I found a whole lotta stuff! I came back home and Muddy and Guppy were waiting, playing with Ben and Brian. Addie was asleep.  We played the Wii for a while, then all went to dinner.  Came home, then Mom Mom and Pop Pop came over.  And here we are.
Phew, what a day!

Nice day

Uneventful day, mostly at least, is how today was described.  Brian mowed the lawn, while Addie, Ben and I drove around in the their jeep for an hour, on a fully charged battery.  That's the only way that 210 lbs of people can ride in that thing at the same time.  One full hour, though, not too shabby.  We were all over the streets, through the whole neighborhood.  They thought they were hot stuff.
We put the waterslide up.  Muddy and Guppy came over.  Looking back at it, we didn't actually spend too much time in the water at all.  Addie and Ben wanted to go on the swings, which is code for "I want to take a nap."  Muddy and I graciously obliged and no kidding, pushed the swings with sleeping kids for almost 2 hours.  We had a bbq and then Muddy and Guppy went home.
We took the kids out for ice cream, since we ate a relatively early dinner. At Friendly's Addie solidified who's child she really is.  As we were getting up from the table, which was FULL of gooey napkins by that point, Addie noticed some chocolate sauce on the table.  Not one to pass on such a delight, she literally spun around to swipe her finger through it and put it in her mouth.  She looked to Brian and said, "MMMMM, that was SWEET." I'm so proud. :)
Addie and Ben both learned they could climb UP the waterslide today.  That's pretty funny, especially when one or both slips or loses footing!  What a riot.
Tomorrow will hopefully be low-key. We kept the slide out, so that'll definitely be going back up.
I'm trying to work on getting pictures transferred over, etc onto this Mac.  Aye caramba!

What a weird week

OK, finally pics from the Italian Festival.  Yes, you can see my pit sweat- it was ungodly hot out.  This is after the $16 ferriswheel ride.  Yup, 4 tickets per person. $1 per ticket. NOT WORTH IT.
The best family picture we have- all looking at the same camera!!

On the hang glider ride....wayyyyy fun.

We had a fun video chat with Onkteb and Aunt Gail tonight.  Addie thoroughly enjoyed that.  I can see them becoming nightly events.
Last night I took Addie and Ben to the dj dance party that my old job was holding for some young adults with disabilities.  It's a project I coordinated before I left.  Anyway, they had a blast.  Ben sang into the microphone, in his karaoke attempt.  He sang this, "lalalaaaalaaa Daddaaaaa, Daaaaada, lallalalalalalaaaaaaa, Daddddaaaaaa." Addie did a stellar version of Girlfriend, to which everyone was laughing and applauding hysterically.
Brian hasn't been home before 830 all week long.  He hasn't seen Ben  awake, if that puts anything in perspective. That sucks.  Tonight he got home at 941.
Not much on tap this weekend, besides spending time together. It's going to be HOT and HUMID, so I'm expecting the waterslide will be up in full force.
Kim has an appointment with the guru of FMD on July 11th in New York City. She's sitting tight until then. Thanks for your continued thoughts!

Gonna try to share some pictures

First time trying to upload pics from the Mac, which is waaaaaay different than the pc. OMG, so different.  Do I really have time to learn how to do all of this? Um, no!
So there's an internal camera, so we can converse over the internet with people (Onkteb and Aunt Gail!!).  We can also take pictures, which the kids think is awesome.

Muddy thinks it's awesome too!

I'm alive!

Sorry it's been super busy.
Kim is home and recovering.  She goes to see the NYC guru for FMD on July 11th. That'll be good for her to see those guys!
I got a new Mac Book Pro this weekend.  Brian and the kids with Guppy picked it up for me while I was doing my final training for CDS.  I'm DONE there! Officially totally done.
I'll try to upload some pictures later on.
Muddy and Guppy picked the kids up for lunch and back to their house for the afternoon. I have lasagna in the oven, and we'll all be eating dinner soon!

Life changes

Sometimes it's easy to get into the day-to-day routine of life. Then something happens that, WHAM, reminds you how fragile life is, how in an instant everything can change. That happened on Tuesday morning.

Kimberly, my 24 year old sister, had a stroke. She's still in the hospital. It turns out she has a "rare disease, and a very unusual case of it." She is diagnosed with Fibromuscular dysplasia. And she has the issue with her carotid artery, which has an aneurysm on it that has blood clots travelling to her brain. It's really, really rare. She might get discharged today, to go home and reover from the stroke, giving her brain some time to heal before surgery. The surgery is risky and controversial. Being the advocate that I am, I contacted the FMD Society of America, who have been awesome. She's had world renowned experts from Ohio review her case with her physicans at the hospital. The head honcho of FMD, Dr. Olin, is supposed to call today. I'm working on getting her seen by him in New York City, so he can assess what should be done (and maybe perform the surgery). It's all complicated by the fact that the bad part of the artery goes behind her mandible in her skull, so in order to do surgery, they'd have to dislocate her jaw completely to access the area. Scary stuff.

Italian Festival and my first day...

Ben decorated himself this weekend. Luckily, those markers wash off with just the touch of water. My kind of markers!

For some reason the other pictures won't upload- so that'll be another post.

I started my new job this morning. Overall, I'm going to love it and fit in very well. I need to work on their People First Language, but just give me time! :) I had to get my PPD screening and a tetanus shot. Holy moly, my arm is soooo sore from the tetanus. I can't believehow sore my arm is!

Father's Day

Father’s Day 2008

Yesterday morning, after dropping the kids off at daycare, I went to Target for some little items. While there, I decided to buy all of the Father’s Day cards we need, which total 9. I spent one hour looking at cards. Seriously, one full hour. See what happens when there are no kids around? I have time to actually read and pick and choose. What a treat.
After reading nearly every card in the section, I came to some conclusions. We’ll call this my anthropological study of American Father’s Day celebrations, via greeting cards.

If an alien were to come down to Earth and look only at the Father’s Day cards to see what it means to be a father in 2008, here’s what they would notice. This is scary to me!
  • Apparently daughters are only money-grubbing girls who like to shop. They don’t care about their fathers, but merely only how much money Daddy will give them. Then they are nice enough to thank him for that.
  • Moms are the ones who really run the family, control everything and make decisions. Apparently Dads need to be treated like one of the children, and need moms’ permission to do things.
  • Dads drink lots of beer. They all have beer guts and sit around on the couch with the remote control all day long.
  • Dads also fart all of the time, which everyone else in the family finds repulsive. Dads apparently find it funny.
  • Dads don’t ever ask for directions and therefore cause undue hardship on their family members while traveling.
  • Dads don’t have much going on in their lives: they go to work (in a tie, of course), drink beer, watch TV with remote in hand and golf. That pretty much sums it up. Oh yeah, and of course dole out money to their shopping-addicted daughters.
  • Isn’t that sad? Out of hundreds, and I mean hundreds, of cards I can pretty much categorize them into those topics. Occasionally one can swap out golfing for fishing, but you get the idea. Oh and you can also add that Dads “try” to fix things, but ultimately end up breaking whatever needed to be fixed, making it worse. Then Mom fixes it.

When I think about our kids and how they see their Dad, I want them to know a few things. I am sure Addie could rattle off a bunch of things that Brian does and why she loves him. Ben knows these things too. I know them too, but thought it would be a nice Ode to my Husband to write them out.

  • Daddy only loves to dance with one or both of the kids. Before they were here, he could listen to music to his heart’s content and never move a muscle. Now, if there’s music on, he’s swinging them around, jumping, spinning, whatever.
  • Daddy’s back hurts when he sits on the ground. He does it anyway, just so he can play with them. Sometimes he can convince them to come up to the couch or table to play, but most times he’ll bite the bullet and sit on the ground.
  • Daddy has his work clothes and his fun Daddy clothes. He has to change as soon as he gets home, before fun Daddy can come out to play.
  • Daddy used to really care about his car and how clean it was inside. He tried to keep this up with our two kids, but realized it was a never-ending battle and now just accepts the fact that crumbs show love and sticky messes show how fortunate we are to have enough to eat and drink.
  • Daddy likes the kids’ toys as much as they do. Remember Christmas and my asking him to get involved in the gift picking out? That turned into the train. Addie’s birthday present turned into the all-terrain jeep, which we adults have ridden on as much as the kids have. Now the waterslide. I rest my case. I can pretty much guarantee our kids will have the coolest, greatest, neatest toys invented- and Brian will pick them all out.
  • Daddy works really hard and lots of hours so we can have lots of fun together. He misses the kids while he’s at work and wishes he was able to be home more. That’s why our weekends are always so much fun.
  • Brian is happiest when he’s got two kids on his lap, cuddled under each arm. It’s times like that when there’s nothing else going on in the world.
  • He makes silly songs up, does stomp routines and finds ways to make our kids giggle at any moment.
  • He shares his food. Apparently, Daddy’s dinner tastes better when he’s eating it, even though the kids just ate the exact same dinner an hour or two earlier.
  • Finally, Brian is always proud of our kids. They never cease to amaze him. Just this morning he told me “Ben would’ve won an award last night.” I asked for what. He responded, “For the most kicks to one’s ribcage in the shortest amount of time.” See, that’s true pride!

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones who didn’t get stuck with one of the greeting card husbands. I can’t imagine life that way.

In closing, just to show a little perspective here, I want to share this story. On Wednesday night my parents came over for dinner. We typically eat around 6:30pm, with hopes that Brian makes it home in time, which is more of a rarity nowadays than a reality. By 7:05 I still hadn’t heard from him. I called him and got his voicemail. When he finally called at 7:15ish, I was frustrated and very short with him on the phone. I knew he wouldn’t be home in time to see Ben before bed, etc. I got off the phone and went back to the dinner table. Addie said to me, “That was Daddy on the phone, right?” “Yup,” I said. “He was calling to make sure we didn’t go on an ambulance, right?” To her, she had no idea that he was late. To our 3 year old, Daddy was checking to make sure we’re safe and happy.

That’s what Addie's and Ben’s Daddy does. That’s all I can ask for.

Mail for Addie

She saw the package as soon as she walked into the foyer. Somehow she just knew it was for her. And she knew who sent it!

By the way, it's such a cool idea, I may just be giving them as gifts to any kids parties we're invited to!

With the new timeframe for getting to work/daycare- we don't have to leave the house til 7:45am, as opposed to previously leaving by 7am- we're getting to spend a lot more time less hectic in the morning. The kids are actually getting a chance to play in a non-rushed manner. It's a nice change.

Yesterday Addie came downstairs and announced, "Mommy I am married." This is what she looked like. She announced she was marrying Ben.

My last day and the kids' first

Addie and Ben went to their new daycare for the first time today. Addie's teacher is Miss Brandi. Ben's is Miss Dina. It's layout is different than our old one. What's neat is that Addie and Ben's areas are only separated by half-walls. So they can technically see each other throughout the day. Overall they handled things well.
I wrapped up things at CDS today. I still have one more training I'm doing there on June 22nd, but other than prepping for that, I'm DONE!
Ben surprised me today while we were climbing the stairs. He counted up to seven with me, without missing a beat and pronounced each number relatively clearly!

Weekend

Life throws lemons at us all sometimes. Here's our attempt at making lemonade this weekend.

Muddy to the rescue on Friday morning
Ben couldn't handle the heat and the fun for too long on Saturday. It was 100 degrees and sunny.
Addie tuckered out too- naked of course
This girl has no fear and loves each slide down!
Graham spent a lot of time with us this weekend too. The waterslide was a big hit with everyone! On Saturday, Aunt Kim, Mom Mom, Pop Pop, Uncle Scott and Cousin Graham came over.
On Sunday, Muddy and Guppy came too, and Mom Mom and Pop Pop, and Uncle Scott and Cousin Graham too!

With all of the toys in the world

and in our house....what do the kids play with?

A whole roll of aluminum foil was very entertaining.
Addie also created her own hot tub for Ben on Saturday night. It consisted of Ben sitting in an empty diaper box and her pouring a bottle of spring water into the box. Water everywhere. When I asked her what she was doing, she so very casually explained, "I made a hot tub for Ben." Duh, of course!
